This is a Community Primary day school providing for boys
and girls aged from 3 to 11 years. It incorporates a Nursery
Class which provides for up to 30 (full time equivalent)
boys and girls who are at least 3 years old at the beginning
of the term in which they are admitted. In addition there
are currently six classes for children who have statements of special
educational needs. Three classes cater for children with particular
learning difficulties, two others for children with language
disabilities, one for those with social and emotional needs and the other two for children with language disabilities.
The Grange is a one-form entry school with a current roll
of 207 mainstream pupils (excluding the nursery), plus 49
children in the six special needs classes.
The school is accommodated mainly within a single, one-story
building consisting basically of four wings around a central
multi-purpose hall. In addition to the main building one
classroom, a computer suite, a music room and a conference
room are situated in an adjacent building. The school is
situated in attractive grounds and has extensive playing-fields.
As far as possible the mainstream children are grouped in
classes containing children whose birth-dates fall in the
same academic year.
Parents carry an enormous responsibility in the selection
of their child's Primary School and have the legal right
to choose what they consider to be the best. Therefore it
is very important that they visit their local schools and
ask questions about organisation and the curriculum available.
Parents considering sending their children to this school
are most welcome to visit at a mutually convenient time
and are free to visit or telephone the school to make an
appointment. The school operates an induction policy that
is designed to make the transitions both from home into
the Nursery class and from nursery (or home) into full-time
school. This involves the following:
- Prior to admission into the nursery class staff are
available to discuss relevant issues with parents.
- Parents are invited to a meeting in the term prior to
admission in which schoolpolicy, curriculum and other
organisational details are discussed.
A series of acclimatisation visits is arranged for each
child. A comparable system operates for the second transition
from the nursery to the full-time Reception Class. The children
have regular contact with and opportunities to mix with
the reception classes, when they can get to know their next
teacher. Pre-school visits are arranged for those children
who do not attend the nursery.
Within a context of professional flexibility we are committed
to the following time allocations for specific subjects,
the range of which is consistent with National Curriculum
requirements. These subjects, which include cross-curriculum
themes where appropriate, are listed below with their relative
